Japan`s Nippon Steel & Sumikin Stainless Wednesday said that it has decided to raise its May prices for stainless cold rolled coils and plates for distributors by Yen 5,000/mt ($46/mt).

NSSC does not reveal its list prices but the current market price for 304 grade CR sheet (2mm thick) in Tokyo is around Yen 360,000/mt ($3,279/mt), while 430 grade CR sheet (2mm thick) is around Yen 270,000/mt ($2,459/mt).

The price of 304 grade plate over 7mm thick is around Yen 510,000/mt ($4,645/mt).

All these prices were unchanged from a month ago, market sources said.

The average price of nickel during March-April increased by $0.08/lb from February-March to $6.20/lb, and the price of ferrochrome during the same period increased by $0.12/lb from February-March to $1.38/lb, NSSC said in the statement.

The Japanese Yen strengthened during the same period by Yen 0.26, to Yen 107.76 to $1. These factors resulted in the rise in NSSC`s alloy surcharge formula.

The company said the domestic demand for stainless CRC and plate has been firm, and the company`s CRC plants at Kashima, near Tokyo, and Hikari in western Japan, as well as its steel plate plant at Yawata in western Japan, had been running at full capacities and were expected to continue to run at full capacities.

An NSSC spokeswoman said the high level of imported stainless CRC was a concern, and the company would continue to monitor the situation cautiously.

"Arrival volume has been above 10,000 mt/month, 18,000 mt in February and 13,000 mt in March, those are high and we are concerned about the impact to the domestic market," she said
